Goki-gata Chawan – The compact Wu-style bowl for dense Matcha

Goki-Gata Chawan

The Goki-gata chawan is of rare compactness. It appears almost squat, with a slightly indented opening and a sturdy body—a shape that demonstrates its strengths particularly in the preparation of koicha , the thick matcha.

"Goki" (呉器) refers to Chinese origins, more specifically to tea wares from the Wu region (now southern Jiangsu), whose aesthetics were adapted in medieval Japan. "Gata," as usual, stands for form or type.

Shape & Proportions

The cylindrical body with a slightly conical interior is characteristic. The upper rim is slightly drawn inward, which keeps the aroma more tightly contained within the bowl. The side walls are thicker than those of open bowls, which favors both the temperature and the density of the matcha.

Application: Optimal for Koicha

In the tea ceremony, the Goki-gata is preferred for preparing koichi . The narrower opening and larger volume relative to the surface allow for even mixing of the thicker matcha with a small amount of water—without excessive cooling.

The spherical inner shape allows for a powerful, vertical movement of the chasen – ideal for vigorously mixing koicha, which is not whipped but “stirred”.

Production & Glaze

This form is often realized in high-fired stoneware —for example, in Mino, Hagi, or Karatsu. The preferred glazes are robust and earthy:

  • Ash glazes with running marks

  • Iron oxide glazes with metallic luster

  • Celadon-like glazes with a greenish-blue shimmer

The base is rather wide and solid, the kōdai is usually deeply cut and striking – in some styles also asymmetrically rounded.

Symbolism & Use

The Goki-gata is a bowl for concentrated moments . It symbolizes reduction, depth, and powerful stillness. It is often used during the winter months or during formal ceremonies with koicha, where the flavor of the tea takes center stage.

For usucha, however, it is less suitable – the narrow opening makes it impossible to whip up a fine foam.
